Widespread flooding and mudslides last month buried tea bushes under thick mud across major growing regions, destroying crops and cutting off income for hundreds of thousands of smallholder tea farmers who produce the bulk of the country's tea.
Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka\'s eastern coast in late November 2025, triggering widespread flooding and landslides across all 25 districts. Farmland, rail lines, roads, and bridges suffered extensive damage, with total reconstruction costs estimated in the billions of dollars. The disaster has left many farming communities facing a long road to recovery.
Heavy rains in late 2018 flooded parts of Vavuniya district twice within months, destroying young paddy crops before harvest. Many farmers took bank loans to replant, only to lose those crops as well, leaving them struggling to repay debt with no income from the season. In Vavuniya alone, more than 1,200 farmers saw thousands of acres of paddy fields damaged by the flooding.
